DORORO
was popular among kids.
The story follows around a young urchin named Dororo and a young Ronin. The Dororo episode 1 and Dororo Episode 2 where the story begins with a village that was devastated and the people almost at the brink of death. The lord of the village Lord Kagemitsu Daigo who was a good king, who loses his faith in the goddess of mercy forms a pact with the demons at the hall of hell where he promises to offer his firstborn son instead of the prosperity of his village and its people. As Daigo waits for his wife to give birth he remembers the pact he made with the twelve demons to trade his firstborn for power. As Daigo's first son is born the demons extract their remittance for the trade between Daigo and the twelve demons. The child is born without limbs, skin, nerves and facial features but the child has lived within him because one of the demons fails to devour it in exchange for the statue of the head of the goddess of the mercy gets blown away. Daigo orders his midwife to dispose of it. The midwife sets the baby adrift the river to survive by itself as she gets killed by a ghoul a monk passing by defeats the ghoul and sees a remnant of demon essence in the child. The baby is later taken care of by Dr.jugai who was the best doctor who makes him prosthetic limbs and facial parts for him. Sixteen years later the child grows out to be a young man still wearing those prostheses traveling alone and hunting ghouls. While hunting ghouls he fights a sludge-like demon Seiko near a riverbank where encounters Dororo a young pretty thief who was chased and beaten up by three men whom Dororo cheated and stole their goods and sold them. The sludge demon devours the three before it could harm Dororo the young Ronin fights the demon with his swords inside his prosthetic arms designed by Dr.jugai
best doctor. The young Ronin defeats the sludge demon. Each demon he kills he regains his missing limbs and his body parts. As he defeats the sludge demon he regains his missing skin. As he regains his missing part one of the statues in the hall of hell gets struck by lightning and splits into two. As time flies by Daigo's wife Nuinokata gives birth to their second son Tahōmaru but still, she feels and misses her first son. Dororo accompanies the young Ronin who was unable to see, hear, talk or feel anything. The only things he had were remarkable swordsmanship, superhuman strength and he could detect the good and the evil by the color of their souls. He and Dororo start their adventure, they go to a nearby village run by a beautiful woman named Bandai Dororo and the Ronin offers to slay the monster that rings the pilgrim bell for a fee there they meet the blind monk whose name was Biwa hōshi, who could also see the color of the people's and ghouls soul by their color. They later find out that Bandai herself was the demon who devoured the travelers passing by. The young Ronin slays the demon and the monster ringing the bell reappears once again then the villager explains that the pilgrim ringing the bell was the first person they killed to feed the demon. After slaying the demon the young Ronin regains his central nervous system. He then reveals his name on sand, Hyakkimaru.
The name was given by Jugai sensei who was a doctor, who not only healed the sick but tend to the victims of samurai who lost their limbs. He made them prosthetic limbs. He even made prosthetic limbs for the dead who died in the war so they could be buried with a prosthetic limb. Before being a doctor he worked for Lord Shiba, his work was to crucify the wounded enemy soldiers until one day his loved one was killed by the Shiba soldiers he couldn't bear the pain and committed suicide by jumping off a cliff into the sea. From there he was rescued by a foreigner who taught him to make prostheses and to heal the sick. One day he found an abandoned baby floating in the river with deformed limbs, nerves or facial features but it was still breathing striving to survive. It was lord Daigo's son. Dr.jugai took the baby in raised it and named it Hyakkimaru. He gave the baby special prosthetic limbs and taught them how to fight with a sword. Hyakkimaru killed a demon named kamaitachi which restored his right leg. That's when Jugai understood the boy attracted the demons cause his body was stolen by the demons. Dr. Jugai made adjustments to his prosthetic arms he inserted a sword inside his prosthetic arms and let him travel the land alone.
Hyakkimaru fights more demons and one by one he gains his lost abilities and body. For the first time he feels pain, he feels the rain the wind and everything.
Hyakkimaru kills Tanosuke and breaks a demon sword Nihiru which returns his ears back to him. At first, Hyakkimaru has difficulty adjusting to his new ability. He is later attacked by a giant bird-like monster but is saved by the blind monk Biwa-hōshi. The next day Hyakkimaru encounters a young woman named Mio whos song was pleasant to his ears. He loses consciousness and collapses from the wounds. The travelers stay with Mio and the other orphaned children's at the abandoned temple. Mio works at night serving at the Sakai camp as a prostitute. Meanwhile, Biwa-hōshi finds a place for them to stay but it was inhabited by a demon. Despite his injuries, Hyakkimaru fights the demon.
To Biwa-hōshi's concern, Hyakkimaru's white aura starts to show a hint of demon red in his soul. They encounter the demon which bites of Hyakkimaru's leg, leaving him in pain and agony. Dororo spies on Mio to find what work she does. Hyakkimaru and the priest return to the Mio's camp with half of his leg torn off but regains the ability to speak. He slowly adjusts his hearing as he listens to Mio's singing. They get close to each other and so the red aura within his soul starts to fade away. Though partially recovered Hyakkimaru returns to kill the Arijigoku demon. The children from the orphanage lend him some of the swords they recovered from the battlefield. This time Hyakkimaru success in killing the demon and regains his lost leg back. He and Dororo return back to the camp only to see Mio wounded and rest of the children's being murdered by the Daigo's troops thinking Mio was a Sakai spy. Hyakkimaru was horrified by the sight, he went berserk slaughtering the Daigo's troops and was stopped by Dororo because Dororo feared Hyakkimaru might turn into a demon for killing peoples. Dororo takes the golden rice seed from dying Mio's hand and buried the dead and they both continue their journey.
The duo faces more powerful and dangerous demons. They come across a female spider-like demon Jorogumo. The demon fights Hyakkimaru and runs away wounded. She sneaks in a nearby village as a beautiful woman to devour some human flesh. She meets up Yajiro who was kind enough to provide shelter and food for her. He gives her a bowl of Ohagi and names her "Ohagi". Though she is hungry she resists herself from feeding on Yajiro due to his kindness and eats the Ohagi instead. The next day Yajiro takes Ohagi to the secret passage that leads out of the village. That secret passage he used to save the villagers from the lord they were not kidnapped or eaten. The villagers find out and attack Yajiro but Ohagi kills them all and saves Yajiro which makes Hyakkimaru find them and fights Ohagi but later he sees her red aura fading turning white. He withdraws from killing them and lets them escape.
Then Hyakkimaru and Dororo save a village that was devastated by a demon that appears on a dark cloud that contains the demon Nokosaregumo. They save a wild boy named Saru and his sister who was dressed as a bride as a sacrifice for the demon from destroying the village. Hyakkimaru defeats the demon and regains his sense of smell.
